With so many competitive keywords on google for “Internet Marketing” it is extremely difficult these days to get good page ranking. However this unconventional guide to long tail keywords just might shed some light on getting your keywords ranked higher with less competition.

Target Long Tail Keyword Phrases

Targeting “long tail keywords” with at least 3 or more words in a phrase is far less competitive and a lot easier to rank for. However keyword research is still an integral part of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)… yet the most common mistake with keyword research is targeting keywords that are too broad. Another ineffective approach to keyword research is targeting keywords with little or no traffic.

Example of Long Tail Keyword Research

In this example I’m going to use Long Tail Pro (LTP) to conduct my keyword research. We’re going to start by using a competitive keyword in our initial search. Since we’re in the make money online niche… lets use “Internet Marketing” as our target keyword:

As you can clearly see… the search term “Internet Marketing” gets over 40k global searches a month. However, LTP displays an average page authority of 72.9 for the top eight related search results. In other words, the higher the page authority from 0 – 100 the more difficult it is to rank for.

LTP provides additional stats that are prevalent to my keyword research e.g., page links, page ranks etc… You can get more info. on this data and how it can help streamline your research by clicking here.

In this example, all I did was add another word to my keyword phrase “Internet Marketing Strategies” and was able to obtain the following long tail keyword phrase results:

Now, although the search volume is less than 3k a month… the competition for this keyword to rank in the top 10 of Google is much more attractive than our first example. Typically, I’d like to see at least 2 to 3 sites with a Page Authority of less than 30 in my search results. But notice the Page Links on the last site… it only has 8. More importantly it has a Page Rank of 0 (which increases my chances to rank even more).

Conclusion

Let’s face it… keyword research can be very tedious to say the least. Yet, it has to be done to leverage your chances of getting good Google rankings for your articles, blog posts, etc… Using a premium software to conduct keyword research obviously provides more statistical data to analyze and can be more efficient in the process.

Alternatively, free tools such a Google Keyword Planner provides keyword ideas and monthly traffic estimates to help build keyword combinations for your sites and campaigns. In either case, your goal should be to get the most SEO value from every resource used to build your online business.

Resource Used: Long Tail Pro

When conducting keyword research… are you still targeting keywords that are too competitive?
